COVID Testing Q&A

What is COVID testing?

COVID testing, or COVID-19 testing, is a diagnostic test that detects the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, a virus that can cause cold or flu-like symptoms that sometimes become severe.

Knowing if you’re infected with COVID-19  can help you identify potential symptoms, determine if you should keep your distance from others to avoid spreading the disease, and whether or not you need treatment.

Triad Internal Medicine offers same-day appointment availability for COVID testing when necessary.

Which symptoms can COVID-19 cause?

COVID-19 may cause the following symptoms:

  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Cough
  • Muscle aches
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Runny nose
  • Congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

These or other symptoms range in severity. They might mimic a mild cold or a severe case of the flu.

What should I expect during COVID testing?

What to expect during COVID testing depends on the type of test you undergo. Your provider may swab the inside of your nose or throat, take a sample of your saliva, or use a blood test to detect antibodies – an indicator of previous COVID-19 infection or possibly a COVID vaccination. These COVID tests aren’t painful, though you may feel brief discomfort.

Your specialist can complete a rapid COVID-19 test in the office or send your sample to a lab for analysis. They might also test for flu, strep throat, or other illnesses.

What happens after COVID testing?

After undergoing COVID testing, you may receive the results during the same appointment. Your Triad Internal Medicine provider discusses the outcome and determines if you’re infected with the virus and need treatment to minimize bothersome symptoms. They may suggest rest and fluids, medications, or additional COVID-19 treatments.

To reduce the risk of contracting COVID or spreading it to someone else, wash your hands often, avoid close contact with other people (especially those with symptoms of COVID-19 or known exposure), and ask your Triad Internal Medicine provider about getting a COVID vaccination.
